About

USD Coin

USD Coin (USDC) is a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. Like Tether (USDT), it’s backed 1:1 by real-world assets to ensure that its price remains stable at $1. It was launched in 2018 as a joint effort from Circle and Coinbase — but, in 2023, Circle assumed sole governance of the token.

USDC has become a preferred means of payment for individuals and businesses in the crypto space. It’s also favored by traders and holders as a ‘safe haven’ asset in the otherwise volatile crypto markets.

Circle is currently available on 15 blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana and Arbitrum.

Unlike USDT, USDC is not backed entirely by fiat — though it still maintains full reserves. However, tokens are still redeemable for dollars.

USDC briefly lost its peg in March 2023 following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. It recovered in a matter of days, however.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best USDC wallet?

With so many options out there, it’s hard to give a one-size-fits-all response. USDC wallets come in all kinds of flavors. For USDC on the Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche and Polygon networks, MetaMask is perhaps the most popular, loved by crypto users due to its support for a vast range of tokens. Its handy app and browser extension make it easy to interact with decentralized applications and manage your portfolio. For Solana users, Solflare and Phantom offer a similar, user-friendly experience. Alternatively, hardware wallets like those from Ledger and Trezor offer superior security, at the cost of being slightly more cumbersome to operate. Of course, if you don’t want to self-custody your funds, custodial wallets (such as those on exchanges like Binance, Coinbase or Kraken) allow you to outsource your security — however, you lose some of the flexibility offered by mobile wallets and hardware solutions.
